Global Sports Brand PUMA announces the 50th anniversary of the iconic Suede. The Suede made its debut in 1968 and became a gamechanger in sport and culture. From track stars to trap stars, from basketball courts to b-boys’ cardboard, the Suede is #ForAllTime.
“The Suede simply represents what we at PUMA stand for as a brand,” says Helmut Fischer, PUMA’s chief archivist. “Taking a standard and making it a must-have. Being iconic.”
To honour the Suede’s 50th anniversary, PUMA is partnering with brand and icons in music, fashion, street, and pop culture to introduce 50 unique drops of the classic silhouette. The Suede celebration will also include re-releases such as the B-Boy Fabulous Pack and the Made in Japan Collectors’ Pack.
While the full roster of collaborations will be revealed in November, the anniversary starts now. October 16th marks 49 years since the Suede’s first and greatest moment in sport culture. On this day in 1968 at the Summer Games in Mexico City, American athlete Tommie Smith broke the 200m world record in PUMA spikes. When he walked to the victory stand, he wore black socks and carried a single PUMA Suede on his left hand.
“The Suede has swag. I loved those shoes and took them to the victory stand because they reminded me of me,” said Mr. Smith. “They were annoyingly strong, unassuming, and dark.” Mr. Smith famously raised his left Suede, placed it on the stand, then raised his right fist in a silent gesture that spoke volumes to the universal fight for equality and human rights.
The Suede 50th Anniversary drops release start November 4th and will be available in PUMA.com, PUMA stores and leading sneaker and lifestyle store worldwide.
