CAPE TOWN LAWYER
NAMED ENVIRONMENTAL HERO
April 2008
South
African environmental lawyer, Cormac Cullinan, has been listed among
the world's most extraordinary environmental heroes of all time.
In a new book entitled Planet Savers: 301 Extraordinary Environmentalists,
to be released in London earlier this year, Cullinan is recognised
for making a significant difference to the planet and its inhabitants
alongside some of the world's most respected environmental warriors
including St Francis of Assisi and Sir David Attenborough.
Cullinan is applauded for his work on overhauling the worlds' current
legal systems in favour of giving the planet and all its creatures'
rights.
Since 2000 Cullinan, a partner in Cape Town based environmental
law firm Enact International, has worked with representatives from
around the globe towards developing an eco-centric approach to law
and governance.
In 2003 he published a book, Wild Law: A Manifesto for Earth Justice,
which advocates that nature is a "great body" that only
functions well when each component flourishes.
In practice, this would mean that before a development project
could go ahead the rights of every aspect of an eco-system would
be considered. If a portion of nature was abused the case would
be tried in a conventional court of law.
Planet Savers: 301 Extraordinary Environmentalists, provides a
who's who of environmentalism and recognises scientists, artists,
business people, priests, poets, politicians, lawyers and many more
who have put their careers, reputations and lives on the line to
defend the world from pollution, deforestation, species loss and
climate change.
Published by Greenleaf publishing, the book is available online
