SOUTH AFRICAN CHENIN IS TERRIFIC VALUE
March 2009

South African Chenin Blancs are attracting attention in the challenging US market because they offer an unbeatable combination of quality and value.

Award winning wine columnist Edward Deitch says there is no better source for good, inexpensive Chenin Blanc than South Africa and has highlighted 2008 vintages released under the Mulderbosch, Indaba and Kanu labels.

Earning this "value for money" label is terrific news for the South African wine industry in these troubled times when consumers keep an eagle-eye over every hard earned penny.

Deitch, writing in his column affiliated with the Today Show on March 18 (http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/29759984/), said the well-priced South African Chenin Blancs "are crafted into appealing, food-friendly wines that are all but effortless to drink for just about any occasion".

His comments came after tasting several Chenin Blancs from Cape Classics, a New York-based importer of South African wine.

Andre Shearer, the South African-born CEO of Cape Classics, said: "The continuing media endorsements from influential players including Edward Deitch are highlighting the Cape wine category at a critical time."

In his column, Deitch wrote that the three best Chenins from the Cape Classics' portfolio all retailed for under $15 and were easy to drink, had pleasing tropical fruit and honey notes and were excellent with food, especially spicy dishes.

Deitch said the Mulderbosch Chenin Blanc, with a suggested price of $14, was the most complex and refined. The Kanu, which retails for about $10, was the "fun wine", while the Indaba, just $8 a bottle, was a "true bargain". The latter wine, produced by Cape Classics, is blended with 6% Sauvignon Blanc, which gave it "a noticeable zip".

Besides producing Indaba wines, Cape Classics is also the largest importer of fine South African wine into the USA and represents 18 premium labels including Rustenberg, Mulderbosch and De Toren. The company supplies restaurants and retail outlets in 49 states across the USA.
