TOKARA OPENS DELICATESSEN
November 2009
TOKARA winery in Stellenbosch has launched a deli and the family-friendly venue has spectacular views across olive groves and vineyards with Table Mountain as a back drop.
The TOKARA DeliCatessen is a mother-daughter operation with Anne-Marie Ferreira accompanied by her daughter Kara, who is also one of the chefs. They oversee a dynamic young team.
The aim is to serve "interesting real food", as opposed to fine dining so expect healthy basic meals with a twist. The ingredients are fresh and local and as far as possible organic. There is a hot and cold buffet, but food can also be ordered from a menu which is updated regularly.
Visitors can sit outdoors on summery days but on rainy days, they are still able to enjoy the view as there is a section enclosed in glass. Under floor heating and comfy sofas around a huge fireplace, ensure the deli is a cosy spot even on the wettest and wildest wintry days. The deli seats a maximum of 100 people indoors and outdoors.
The design is clean and crisp, with some quirky pieces scattered among the mostly contemporary furniture.
The deli is child-friendly, with supplies of toys, colouring books, story books, special chairs for little ones and two tree houses constructed like weaver's nests.
Besides serving meals, the deli stocks TOKARA's olive products and wine as well as interesting local products that are well worth taking the scenic drive up to the farm on the crest of the Helshoogte Pass, 5km outside Stellenbosch.
The deli produce is local and as far as possible organic and preservative and colorant free. There are cheese and hams, free range chickens, venison, lamb and duck, as well as jams, pastries, cakes, organic yoghurt, milk and cream, fresh vegetables and flowers.
The opening of the TOKARA DeliCatessen coincides with extensions to The Olive Shed - the success of this modern boutique-style production plant left TOKARA with no choice but to extend the production area.
Opening the deli is the perfect way to encourage visitors to experience the wonderful Stellenbosch property and its award-winning olive oils.
The Olive Shed at TOKARA is the only South African producer of single varietal olive oils, namely Mission, Frantoio and Leccino, as well as a multi-varietal blend. These olive oils are sold under The Olive Shed at TOKARA brand. The jewel in the crown is a TOKARA Premium olive oil - also a unique blend.
The olive oils deliver on flavour and more than meet the requirements of health-conscious consumers. The Heart Foundation has certified TOKARA's extra virgin olive oils - to qualify as extra virgin, they must not exceed the limit of .8% free fatty acids. TOKARA olive oils are well below that threshold at .3% - a healthy indicator of the quality of its cold-extraction production process.
The Olive Shed at TOKARA has also passed the SAFSIS audit for food safety and personal hygiene, ensuring the olive oils are bottled and ready for consumption under the best possible conditions.
The deli launched in October 2009 and is open from Tuesday to Sunday between 9am and 5pm. For more details email or phone (021) 808 5950.
