2010 EDITION OF HOW 2 HELP CAPE TOWN HITS BOOK SHOPS
May 2010
The fourth book in the popular 'How 2 Help' series will shortly hit the shelves of Cape Town book stores. How 2 Help - A guide to worthwhile causes is at once a practical and inspiring book that highlights the needs and stories behind some of the many voluntary projects in Cape Town. The aim of the book is to increase awareness of the incredible work happening in our own back yards on a daily basis and encourage people to get more involved.
How 2 Help was founded by Capetonian Tracey Chiappini-Young in 2003. The latest book is written by Rebecca Hickman, and provides an informative and easy to use guide to some of the many fantastic grassroots projects in the Cape Town area, each personally visited by the author or another researcher.
The guide includes the amazing stories behind forty-six worthwhile and sustainable local projects, contact details and a list of ways to help for each initiative. It also includes a grid to help you work out which projects fit your interests and a table that enables you to match the time you have to offer with the projects which could benefit.
"When I launched the how2help initiative in November 2003, my idea was simple, to compile a series of regional easy-to-use guides, which tell the stories and highlight the needs of a few wonderful, easily-accessible development projects. The aim was to make it easier for individuals to identify 'worthwhile causes' that they feel passionate about and to build personal, enduring relationships with those projects, rather than adopting a 'cheque-book' distance."
"In reality, by making a small but meaningful contribution towards social upliftment, we learn so much more than we teach and we receive so much more than we give. It is a truly enriching experience, "said h2h founder Tracey Chiappini-Young.
The book is primarily aimed at Capetonians, but with unprecedented numbers of visitors coming to Cape Town over the coming months, it is hoped that many will use the book to connect with worthwhile local projects that they can continue to support when they return home. One of these projects, the GCU Academy (Great Commission United) is a soccer academy in Heideveld attended by about 300 children, which provides after-school sports coaching, tuition and mentoring for children aged from four years upward.
Other projects included in the book include children's homes in Khayelitsha, a homeless shelter in Langa, urban micro-farming in Philippi, a place of safety for small children in Hout Bay, job placement schemes, literacy classes for young pupils in Masiphumelele, support services for abused women in Gugulethu, and a brass band of over 70 children in Hanover Park.
How 2 Help - A guide to worthwhile causes will be of interest to anyone who wants to contribute to the wellbeing of the wider Cape Town community, to find out more about how to meet the diverse needs and challenges or who just wants to get involved and make a difference. It can also serve as the perfect birthday, Christmas or company gift for family, friends, employees, suppliers and customers.
All h2h profits from the sale of this book will go to a selection of projects featured in the book. How 2 help - a guide to worthwhile causes costs R120 and is available at all leading bookstores or on order from Blue Weaver distributors on or 021 531 3545.
