Table Mountain Cableway have announced a renewed and expanded sponsorship that sees them taking the title sponsorship role of the newly named Cableway Charity Challenge, happening this Saturday 1 April 2017.

From professional athletes to intrepid individuals or teams, the event sees 200 participants attempting to conquer as many mountain summits as they can from sunrise to sunset. Ascending the 800 double size steps of Platteklip Gorge, participants are then given the chance to catch their breath as they descend towards the close of the 5,5km circuit via the cable car.

Athletes will be the clocked in after each completed round throughout the day, which will conclude with a prize giving at the Lower Station Viewing Deck at the 6pm. This area will also provide participants with much needed sanctuary should they need to have a break during the event.

“The Cableway Charity Challenge is an exciting part of our annual calendar,” says Cableway Managing Director Wahida Parker. “Since its inception in 2009 the event has raised over R6 million for charities that provide educational support in Cape Town. At the Cableway – education is a pivotal part of our corporate social responsibility, it is a key in enabling future generations to empower themselves towards growth and success. The Charity Challenge title sponsorship opportunity enables us to further give back to organisations and individuals in need of support.”

An extremely popular event amongst locals, the 2017 Charity Challenge entries were full within 13 days of opening. With over R800 000 already raised, this year the beneficiaries are:

  • The South African Education and Environment Project, a non-profit organization providing education, life skills, and psycho-social support programmes for children, youth and education providers.
  • Paedspal, a public-private partnership providing care and support for children living with terminal and life limiting illnesses.
  • CoolPlay which uses sport to teach life-skills to school children often lacking in stable and supportive family structures.
  • Wilderness Search and Rescue, provider of volunteer rescue services.
